BOYS BASKETBALL A painful finish Grizzlies let eight-point fourth-quarter lead slip away in season-ending overtime loss to South Albany Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Follow @@ADTsports DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Follow @@ADTsports Posted Mar. 3, 2016 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Follow @@ADTsports Posted Mar. 3, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News South Albany fought back from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime then dominated the extra session to hand Ashland a season-ending 69-59 loss in an OSAA Class 5A boys basketball play-in game Wednesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. The Grizzlies were fortunate to get to OT after South Albany’s Cruz Vasquez hit two free throws to give the Rebels a 54-51 lead with 24 seconds to go in regulation, as Stenley Graham swished a 3 from the top of the circle with 10 seconds left to keep the Grizzlies’ season going. The visitors shook off the dramatic turn soon thereafter, however, outscoring Ashland 15-5 in overtime, thanks in part to a clutch 9-for-10 effort from the free throw line. “It was back and forth,” Ashland head coach Sam Osofsky said. “We gave so much great effort defensively. You know, they’re a really good offensive team and we knew that their shots would come at some point and they hit some tough shots. I felt like our boys did everything that we had done the whole game, but they hit some tough shots at the end. You gotta tip your hat to them.” The loss sends the Grizzlies packing after an 8-15 season and fourth-place finish in the Midwestern League. The Rebels (13-12), who placed fifth in the Mid-Willamette, advance to the 16-team state tournament. Jaden Guilford, who led all scorers with 22 points, scored on a driving layup to start overtime and the Rebels led the rest of the way. Malik Pippa, who led Ashland with 21 points, scored on his own driving layup to cut South Albany’s lead to 58-56 and later hit a long 3 to keep the Rebels within 62-59 with 39 seconds to go, but South Albany hit seven consecutive free throws to keep Ashland at arm's length. Ashland was in great position to advance to the round of 16 after Peyton Fuller’s 3-pointer late in the third quarter gave the Grizzlies a 45-35 lead, their largest of the second half. Ashland still led by eight, 47-39, after Walker Shibley canned a floater with six minutes to go, but the Rebels, who outscored the Grizzlies 32-14 in the final 12 minutes, heated up in a hurry. Shibley scored 12 points and Ethan Jones nine for the Grizzlies. Vasquez, who finished with 14 points, started the rally with a 3 with 5:40 left in the fourth, and Tanner Hemzacek rattled in another 3 less than a minute later to cut Ashland’s lead to two points. Guilford scored on a driving layup with 3:15 left for the first tie of the game, and the Rebels, who trailed 16-4 late in the opening quarter, seized their first lead of the game a minute later, 52-51, when Guilford drained a long 3.
