But lest we do take it for granted, let's pause for a moment and give praise where praise is due. The U.S. News and World Report annual list ranked Ashland as 22nd out of the state's 326 public and charter schools, earning it a silver medal. Three charter or specialty schools earned the state's only gold medals. Why was Ashland High honored? The numbers tell the story and here are a few: A graduation rate of 86 percent, measured against a statewide average of 74 percent. Ninety-nine percent of AHS students met or exceeded standards in the state reading proficiency test. Eighty-eight percent of AHS students met or exceeded standards on the state math proficiency test. Eight-seven percent of the school's disadvantaged students were judged proficient on the state tests. Of course, what those numbers may not show, but clearly indicate, is the quality of education that the high school's teachers, administration, parents and students — along with the community at large — expect. And they back up that expectation with academic performances that are the envy of much of the state. Ashland has a learning and inquisitive culture that's evident in how community members live their lives and the values they place on education and knowledge. The school's performance reflects that, which is something none of us should take for granted.
