Grizz capture snowboarding titles By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High boys and girls snowboarding teams captured team Boardercross state championships and two Grizz girls won individual titles Friday and Saturday at the 20-team OISA High School Snowboarding Championships at Mount Hood Meadows and Timberline Lodge. Contributed photo The Ashland boys took first place in the team Boardercross, held Friday at Mount Hood Meadows, behind strong runs by Evan Campbell, Own King, Alex Krill, Sammy Scheer, Jacob Ripper and Eli Otter. The Grizzlies edged Summit High of Hood River, last year's state champ. Campbell recorded the best run of the day, finishing motocross-type course, littered with jumps and banks, in just 35.68. The Grizz girls pulled out their team Boardercross title behind rock solid performances by Hallie Beaver, Stephanie Elliott, RieAnn Fullwood, Anna Gordon-Norby, Emma Kurtz and Ella Street. Fullwood, a freshman who grew up in Nome, Alaska, also took the individual Boardercross championship, beating out 35 other competitors. She was one of four Grizz girls who finished in the top-four, including Maddie Wasserman (fourth), Gordon-Norby (fifth) and Ella Street (sixth). "It was astonishing," AHS snowboarding coach Matt Faurot said of Fullwood's performance. "She just seems some days to be so fast and on that nobody can stop her." The Ashland girls took second place in the team slopestyle competition as well to lock up the overall team championship, dubbed the SATO Cup. Ella Street, Elliott, Lily McCabe, Kurtz, Gordon-Norby and Beaver teamed up to place second in the slopestyle team race. Elliott, a junior, captured the individual slopestyle championship, while Beaver took fourth. "I actually am not surprised because we were kind of on a roll," Faurot said. "We did really well last year, but they suffered injuries, and this year we had a really deep, skilled team." Making the semifinals for the AHS boys in the individual Boardercross event was Campbell, King and Robbie McNamara. The Grizz boys placed second in the team Boardercross event last season, while the girls took sixth.
