That this happened on April 1 only confirms what a fool I was for being so careless with a prized possession of 33 years. You can imagine the thoughts going through my mind as I watched my ring go down the drain knowing I had to go back out to the restaurant and face my wife with the dreadful news. Dal’s assistance and positive attitude made it a lot easier to deal with and we are grateful for his not simply shrugging it off and saying "too bad, it’s gone." Dal and one of the cooks tried for some time to get at the plumbing with their wrenches but soon realized that a plumber would have to be hired for the job. We chose to continue our travels and Dal promised to phone us with any news of the ring’s recovery — or not. It wasn’t long before we got the fantastic call that gold had been discovered! The lost wedding band was shipped to us in Canada by courier and we have received no request for payment from Dal for either the plumber or the courier. The Wild Goose has been one of our favorite stops when traveling I-5 and now it will be even more special knowing to what lengths Dal Carver and his staff are prepared to go for their customers. If the Ashland Chamber of Commerce or Tourism Office has an award for superior customer service, Dal (Lord of the Ring) and the Wild Goose Cafe certainly deserve gold. Barrie Barnes Black Creek, B.C. Invite the homeless The Ashland Daily Tidings reported that an Ashland Unity pastor plans to purchase the Circle of Teran ranch building and will use it to treat wealthy individuals for drug and alcohol addiction. She is proposing charging these folks $30,000 a month. I am familiar with the 11,000-square-foot building and its 11 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. I remember that one of the bedrooms has four bunk beds. May I respectfully suggest that the church offer that bedroom to the homeless and allow them to attend the counseling sessions? The hot showers and hot meals would go a long way to rehabilitating these unfortunate individuals. Each month a new group could enter the program. This act of kindness would be in keeping with the mission of the church and justify the exemption from payment of property taxes. Currently the building generates $36,000 a year in tax revenue. Barney Spera Ashland City spoiled by OSF Many communities, large and small, support nonprofit theater. Ashland, however, expects to be supported by nonprofit theater. The closing of Thanks for The Memories reported on April 20 is only the latest in a string of nonprofit community theaters to be brought to their knees by an intransigent city government. Ashland Community Theatre has been trying to establish a home for almost a quarter century. Grants Pass, Medford and Talent to our north and Yreka to our south, communities far less affluent than ours, all have thriving local theaters built with the enthusiastic help of their governments. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, while technically nonprofit, is actually our largest industry. You’d think, because of its presence, Ashland would have an active theater community. It should! Theater requires constant creative interchange. Multiple theaters could furnish such an environment. Instead of just a town with a theater, we could be a world theater center. It is telling that our government officials, spoiled by OSF, call our nonprofit theaters “businesses!” If Angus Bowmer were to attempt to start the festival today I doubt even he would be able to afford the permits and overcome the bureaucratic obstacles that would doubtlessly be placed in his way.
