SEEN ON SCENE Rotary Club of Ashland receives a global grant Comment By Rotary Club of Ashland DailyTidings.com By Rotary Club of Ashland Posted May. 31, 2016 at 12:01 AM By Rotary Club of Ashland Posted May. 31, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News The Rotary Club of Ashland (RCA), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Guanajuato, recently received a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation (TRF) to provide clean water to three rural communities outside of Guanajuato, Mexico. The Ashland club donated just less than $20,000 towards this project, and the Rotary Club of Lithia Springs also donated $7,000. These funds, along with donations from other district clubs, were matched by Rotary District 5110 and by the TRF’s World Fund, and resulted in providing $83,000 to benefit the communities of El Terrero, El Laurel and Picones. Currently, these communities have no clean running water and must hike to springs to get water for their families. A gravity flow water system will be installed for each community, enabling the spring water to flow into a central cistern, and then be distributed out to houses in the community. During the week of April 3, a team from the RCA of Ashland traveled to Guanajuato to kickoff these projects. The team consisted of President-Elect Barbara Patridge, and World Community Service committee members Karen Amarotico, Angelica Ruppe, and Juli and Bob Di Chiro. While there, the team participated in the official contract signing ceremony with SIMIPAC, the municipal water agency in Guanajuato. This agency provided all of the engineering work to plan the projects, and will also be responsible for overseeing and managing the work. The Guanajuato club will provide fiscal management and direct oversight of the projects. When completed, more than 1,000 rural residents will have access to clean drinking water. Club members also visited each of the communities and met with the rural committee for each community. These local committees are charged with providing labor for the water systems installation, and to be responsible for maintaining the system once it is installed. This aspect lends to the sustainability of these systems once installation is complete. The target date for completion is June 30, 2016. From 2007-2013, RCA raised $210,000 from three Taste of Guanajuato events to provide housing to rural communities in Guanajuato. By partnering in a government sponsored program known as “Mi Casa Diferente,” the club was able to provide funds for 250 families to build new houses. All of these houses were plumbed for both water and electricity; however, these resources are currently not available. Bringing water to these communities is the next step in improving the lives of rural residents in Guanajuato. Because of this work, the Ashland and Guanajuato clubs have built a very strong partnership over the years. Without the work and support by local Rotarians in Guanajuato, these projects could not be successful. Rotary International has identified six crucial areas for international grants. Water and sanitation is one of those areas, and the needs in these rural communities continues to be great. RCA intends to host local fundraising to raise funds for continued work in Ashland's sister city of Guanajuato. The goal is to improve the health and well being of rural residents to enhance their ability to rise up out of poverty.
