--> --> School sport physical exam bill sent to governor SALEM (AP) - A bill requiring students in grades 7-12 to have physical checkups before playing school sports was sent to Gov. John Kitzhaber by the House on Thursday. The House accepted joint conference committee amendments that also require chiropractors to have training and experience in detecting heart and lung disorders if they perform the physicals instead of a doctor. The bill, SB160, is a response to three Oregon high school athletes dying of heart conditions in the 1999-2000 school year. Most school districts now require some type of exams before sports activity, but the thoroughness and frequency of the checkups vary. The bill requires checkups to meet standards set by the state Board of Education. The bill also requires follow-up exams every two years for students who continue participating in sports. Backers say the examinations will help prevent tragedies in the future. Email your...
