Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 24, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 24, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 24, 1915 CHARGES AGAINST HITTSON FIZZLE OUT AT HEARING Allegations made at the last meeting of the city council that Chief of Police Hittson used profanity to such an extent that one family moved out of his neighborhood, exploded in a hearing before Police Judge Gay this morning, when Mrs. C.E. Denning, author of the charges, and Mrs. Oda Caves, whom she named as her informant, testified under oath that they had never heard Chief Hittson swear. Mrs. Denning testified that she did not know Chief Hittson. The hearing was called by Mayor Emerick to clear Chief Hittson's name from the stigma of petty gossip. Before Mrs. Denning appeared in court, it was necessary to issue a bench warrant. Asked why she did not comply with the subpoena, she testified she remained at home on the advice of her attorney, Fred Mears, which places him liable for prosecution for contempt of court. Mrs. Denning was sworn and testified that she had never heard Chief Hittson swear. Mrs. Oda Caves was next called as a witness, and testified that she had never heard the police lead curse, and that she had never told Mrs. Denning that she had. The action was the outgrowth of the agitation for a police matron at the last meeting of the city council, when Mrs. Denning made the accusation. At the time the charged was classed by Mayor Emerick, members of the council and Prosecutor Kelly, one of the spokesmen for the women, as "slander." Last week the nearest neighbors of Chief Hittson issued a signed letter sending forth that the profanity indictment was false   BEEKMAN ESTATE TOTALS $318,845 Inventory of the estate of the late C.C. Beekman, pioneer banker of Jackson County, places his total wealth in Jackson and Klamath counties at $318,845.72. This does not include property in northern California that will be probated in Siskiyou county. The schedule of his holdings which consist of seventy typewritten pages, itemizing each and every article, was filed with the county court this morning. The personal property of the deceased amounted to $282,955.72. The real estate is valued at $35,890.
