COLLEGE FOOTBALL Beavers will get another shot at Buckeyes Oregon State nearly pulled of big upset 30 years ago By Brad Fuqua Corvallis Gazette-Times DailyTidings.com By Brad Fuqua Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Aug. 15, 2014 @ 8:45 pm By Brad Fuqua Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Aug. 15, 2014 @ 8:45 pm » Social News Oregon State will be facing Ohio State to open the 2018 campaign. The Beavers will travel to “The Horseshoe” on Sept. 1 of that season to play the Big Ten power. Ohio Stadium is the fourth-largest venue nationally with a capacity of 104,944. Ohio State needed to fill a void when a two-year series against North Carolina for 2017-18 was cancelled. Conference realignment and the addition of a ninth Big Ten game starting in 2016 got in the way of the original plans. This will be the third meeting in the series. In the first game on Sept. 21, 1974, No. 2 Ohio State rolled to a 51-10 victory. But in the second meeting played on Sept. 8, 1984, a No. 6-ranked Buckeyes team had to rally to avoid an upset. Ohio State had to endure boos from its own fans at halftime as the Buckeyes trailed Oregon State, 14-3, on national TV. In the second half, the home team had all the answers in a 22-14 victory to avoid what would’ve been seen as a shocking upset. John Wooldridge scored on a 4-yard run with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter to give Ohio State its first lead. The game clincher came in the fourth on a 1-yard run by Keith Byars. “Everyone found out today that Oregon State is tougher than they thought,” Ohio State coach Earle Bruce said. “They were a good football team.” Oregon State quarterback Ricky Greene completed 19 of 34 passes for 241 yards and wide receiver Reggie Bynum had 11 catches for 148 yards, which at the time ranked as the second-best single-game performance in Beavers history. “I thought we controlled the whole game,” Greene said. “We had a couple breakdowns, lost our intensity in the second half, and that hurt us. If you ask me, Ohio State isn’t that great. They weren’t that strong.” Greene scored on a 3-yard QB draw in the first quarter and James Terrell had a 14-yard TD run for the Beavers on a spectacular play. On fourth-and-inches, Greene faked to tailback Donald Beavers and pitched to Terrell, who slipped down the right sideline for the TD. On the day, the Beavers outgained the Buckeyes in total yardage, 387 to 370. “After this, we should be able to come into the Pac-10 with a lot of confidence,” Greene said. “We should be able to give anybody in the Pac-10 fits.” That didn’t exactly work out with Oregon State finishing with a 2-9 record — the lone wins over Wyoming, 41-14, and California, 9-6. Ohio State finished 9-3 overall, ranked No. 12 and No. 13 in the national polls and lost to USC, 20-17, in the Rose Bowl.
