Mountain biker who died on Ashland trail identified The Jackson County Sheriff's Office released this photo of the trail section where a mountain biker crashed Monday. Tuesday Feb 6, 2018 at 5:10 PM Feb 6, 2018 at 5:11 PM Local report The Ashland man who was found dead on Hitt Road trail in Ashland was an experienced cyclist. He died from a head trauma during an accident crash on Monday, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday. John Edward Thomas, Jr., 56, was riding through a dip in the trail when he lost control and crashed Monday, according to a press release. Thomas, who was wearing a helmet at the time, died from a head trauma incurred in a fall from his bicycle. He was said to be an experienced cyclist who was familiar with the trail. A hiker found Thomas on the trail west of Ashland, approximately two miles south of Strawberry Lane, just before 1 p.m. Monday. The trail is a common thoroughfare for mountain bikers, sheriff’s deputies said.
