After 20 years of volunteering for the City of Ashland, Donna Daniels (right) sitting next to Barbara Keen, is now spending much of her time volunteering at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce where she answers questions and phones. Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings Both d'Entremont, 87, and Daniels, 68, arrived at the APD as volunteers in 1984. She told him she would stay until he retired or after 20 years. This month, Daniels, the longest serving volunteer at the police department retired. "I'm still here and she figured 20 years was enough," d'Entremont said. "She was always ready to volunteer. Whenever I asked her if she could do something, she never refused. She always said she could handle it. She did a lot of things for this community. She'll be missed, no question about it. She has always been committed to helping out the community and others." Daniels did everything from watershed patrols, housechecks, volunteering at parades and other events, driving new police cars from Portland, to bringing police cars to the car wash. For many years, d'Entremont said when the Siskiyou Summit would shut down due to snowstorms, she would use her own CB radio and call truckers to warn them of the freeway closing. He said he was impressed with how hardworking Daniels was and how well she treated others. "She is such a dedicated person, and she always had a smile and a kind word" d'Entremont said. "She's one of those people that wants to do something for society. She was someone you could depend on to do the job, and do it well � It's weird not having her around, she's always been here." Daniels said she enjoyed her time volunteering for the APD. "I just did gobs and gobs of work," Daniels said. "For me, it was a way to meet and learn from people in the community and to help people. It was a great experience." Besides her duties at the APD, Daniels also volunteered at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce and drove cancer patients to their appointments, which she plans to continue. She said she wanted to have more time to travel with her husband. Daniels moved to the Rogue Valley from New Jersey in 1980, and Ashland in 1983. She said volunteering was the perfect way to get to know the community better and to help others. "I wanted to give back to the community and be of service and be useful," Daniels said. "It meant a lot to me when I was out and people thanked me for what I was doing. It's wonderful to make others feel good." Daniels said she highly recommends those who move to a new community to volunteer with a local organization. "They should jump in, use their spare time and volunteer," she said. "It will help you learn your new community better and make you feel good that you were of service to others."
