Solstice celebration honors Pilgrim Agnes Baker Pilgrim. File photo by Orville Hector Friday Dec 16, 2016 at 5:38 PM Dec 16, 2016 at 5:42 PM Local report An interfaith winter solstice celebration with Grandmother Agnes "Grandma Aggie" Baker Pilgrim and other speakers and musicians is set for Wednesday. Entitled "Light and Darkness: The Dance Between Grief and Gratitude," it will honor Pilgrim, 92, the oldest member of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. A member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, she is one of Oregon's most outspoken protectors of water and salmon. While solstice marks the darkest day of the year, organizers say, it also heralds the return of light, and is an opportunity to acknowledge grief dur to pain and injustice in the world, but also to celebrate light by joining in gratitude through music, community, prayer and presence and blessing of a cherished elder. Greenleaf Restaurant and Sauce are providing food the the event, and Little Creek Ranch is furnishing lodging for Pilgrim. The event is free. Donations will be accepted to support Grandma Aggie. It's set to start at 7 p.m. Dec. 21 at Havurah Synagogue, 185 North Mountain Avenue. Call 541-488-7716 for more information.
