Webb at home with new roommates, rank By Jennifer Squires Ashland Daily Tidings Sgt. Coby Webb lives with five retired police officers. There's a horse and four dogs, including Maggie, an award-winning bloodhound. At last count, Maggie had found 31 missing children during her tenure with the Riverside County Sheriff's Office in Southern California. "They're basically my roommates," said Webb, a Rogue Valley native who moved back this winter to take a position with the Ashland Police Department. Webb, 34, started at the APD about three months ago after 12 years with Riverside County. As a deputy sheriff, Webb was a part of the bike patrol and the mounted patrol, a canine handler and a hostage negotiator. She trained all of her animals and they worked with her, although she emphasizes the "roommates" have since retired to Southern Oregon and will not join her at APD. "I was like their sergeant," Webb said. "I love working with animals and it's basically like a hobby now, which is nice." The retirement of the animals also gives Webb more time to focus on her new role: sergeant. "This is the first time I've been a sergeant. I'm learning a new position," she said. "I have the experience, but it's totally new for me." Although she spent a dozen years in Southern California law enforcement, Webb would return to the Valley frequently to visit family and friends, ski and river raft. She always wanted to come back. Last year the opportunity appeared via her family. They had sent her the job-posting for the sergeant position at APD. "I thought, 'you know, I'll apply and if I get it, I'll run with it,'" Webb said. "I loved Riverside. It was worth something." The "something" was the experience that pushed Webb to the front of the applicant pool and brought her back to Ashland. "I grew up here," said Webb. "It's like 'OK, this is my community too.' I have something in it." As a sergeant, Webb is still a uniformed officer working outside of the office, but she is no longer a first-responder. APD sergeants usually come on-scene to back up patrol officers. She is responsible for managing and supervising other officers on duty, as well as mentoring the patrol force. "You're out in the field still, but you are management," Webb said. "It's definitely exciting and challenging. You're the one who's mentoring and guiding officers."
