For Bueter, keeping this tradition alive, which was passed down to him from his teachers is of vital importance. "There's still a group of people around that will ensure that blacksmithing is never forgotten," he said. "It was ingrained by my teachers to never let the tradition die." It's a command he still lives out. Bueter has had several local high school students study under him as blacksmith interns. "I feel it's important to pass on the trade to others," he said. "It's been great to show them to do something in life." Bueter said he can make anything his customer wants if they bring him a drawing. His blacksmith work includes making candle stands, curtain rods, steel fabrications, as well as awnings and railings at local businesses such as at the new Ashland eatery Dragonfly. He never gets tired of creating his metal work, Bueter said. "I have an appreciation of actually doing it," he said. "I like heating the metal and using your skills to change this piece of metal to what's in your minds eye." Bueter said he enjoys and appreciates the artistic inspiration the town provides. "I love Ashland," he said. "It's a very open-minded community. People here see the value of things that are handmade and the energy put into it. These people understand what art is about." Blacksmithing is not the only artistic endeavor Bueter is working on. The past several months, Bueter has been hard at work making an electric vehicle for a customer. The 46-inch wide vehicle will have the capacity of being in bike lanes and runs on 12-volt batteries, with a four-wheel drive series of battery packs. "I'm always dabbling in electric cars, trying to invent new things that will make the world a better place," he said. "I just feel right now, it's important to create something like this and to try to have less impact on the earth." For more information on his work, call Bueter at 890-1095.
