The city of Ashland should take care of her 100 percent. As her attorney states, “The rest of the citizens would want to know the city would take care of them if something like this happened.” In no way did she contribute to the problem. I cannot imagine a worse feeling than having your home filled with sewage and then having to battle the very city that caused the problem. Surely Ashland, with its fat city budget, can find the funds to make things right by the Shaffer family. In addition to restoring her home back to the original condition, I believe the city owes her more than that. It sounds like she has incurred lots of extra expense, family separation and stress! It is difficult to put a value on family separation, anguish and stress, but I urge the city to try. City of Ashland do the right thing and do it now! Deana Lynn Ashland Support road closures I fully support the BLM closing 164 of 412 miles of roads in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument to protect the biodiversity that the monument fosters. That’s only one-third of the road mileage in the monument. This is the only national monument created for its unique and extensive biodiversity. Human interface jeopardizes this biodiversity, for example, hunters using cars to track/kill wildlife and human debris left behind. Jackson County Commissioner Doug Breidenthal’s aspiration to keep car hunting accessible within the monument is misplaced. If he wants to foster car hunting, why not suggest a location other than our special monument? National monuments are intended to be protected areas similar to national parks, but they can be created only from public lands controlled by the federal government, by proclamation of the president. President Clinton proclaimed our very special area a national monument because of its biodiversity. Scientists indicate that road removal will allow the area to return to a healthier, natural state. Failing road culverts wash undesirable debris into creeks. Wildlife is threatened by human and non-native animal interfacing. Please tell Commissioner Breidenthal ([email protected]) to reconsider this issue for the reasons stated above. Susan Roudebush Ashland Thanks to Ainsworth On Feb. 2, at the Community Center of Ashland, I was honored as a guest in the warm tribute to volunteers by Lori Ainsworth, coordinator of the numerous volunteers of the city of Ashland. Folks thanked us and marveled at the success of this program, perhaps the most successful of a town our size in our country. Praises, music and fine food was our reward, plus the opportunity to see who we were and chat with one another. However, not enough was said as to why there were so many of us, some having volunteered for decades. Lori Ainsworth's approach to her job gets us and keeps us as successful volunteers. She doesn't only welcome us, she sits down with each volunteer and works out what they feel they can do best to Ashland's needs. She ensures a background check is done when needed, she trains each person for what they are to do, and follows up with checking their hours and their progress, always with an encouraging smile. Phew! This gets and keeps us working. We feel needed, know what we are doing, and are rewarded when we do it. Thank you, Lori, for keeping us together in our project Ashland.
