The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced Thursday that Gutches will be the first NAIA wrestler since 2004 to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic's main event on Nov. 1 at the University of Pennsylvania's Palestra arena. At 174 pounds, he'll take on two-time All-American Robert Kokesh of Nebraska, who was originally slated to face Pittsburgh's Tyler Wilps before an injury forced Wilps to drop out. Gutches went 30-3 last season to become the NAIA wrestler of the year and was undefeated against NAIA competition. He's 15-9 in his career against NCAA Division I opponents — notably advancing to the Midlands Championships semifinals last December — and this season will attempt to pull off the seventh four-peat in NAIA history. Trevor Lofstedt was the last SOU wrestler to receive an invitation to the NWCA All-Star Classic, wrestling in a 2007 showcase match. "It's an outstanding opportunity for both the NAIA to be represented and for us as a university," Raiders head coach Mike Ritchey said. "I think it's a heck of a compliment to Brock and his abilities and I feel he's capable of wrestling at that level. So it's an opportunity for him to show you can be an NAIA guy and wrestle at a really high level. He's pretty pumped up." Gutches and Kokesh met for the first time last year in the finals of the Reno Tournament of Champions, where Kokesh claimed a 3-1 decision. Gutches comes into the 2014-15 season with a 72-11 career record, including 47 wins by fall and a 13-0 mark at the NAIA Championships. "The Gutches family is synonymous with wrestling in Oregon and worldwide," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. "Brock is an aggressive competitor and will be able to show the wrestling community the talent level that competes in the NAIA." Tickets for the event are on sale now through the Penn Athletic Ticket Office. Gutches and the Raiders will get some additional exposure this season on Nov. 13 when they face Oregon State at Gill Coliseum in a dual that will air live on the Pac-12 Network. The Raiders and Beavers haven't gone at it since the 2009-10 season. SOU will get started with the annual Red & Black Intrasquad at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5. The Raiders will stay home for their first dual of the season against Menlo at 8 p.m. on Nov. 7.
