LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Nov. 28 DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Pass Carbon Free Act Burning fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil) is changing our air quality and our climate for the worse. Drought, wildfire, disappearance of fish and spread of disease all are consequences we see —- now. And they are using up our tax money as well as our personal income. Fossil-fuel companies have offloaded these costs onto society. By making their carbon pollution free, we rig the game, giving them an unfair advantage over newer and cleaner sources of energy. U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Sen. Brian Schatz, R-Hawaii, have introduced the American Opportunity Carbon Fee Act. I hope that our Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden will sign on to it and get a much-needed debate going. It's a market-based plan, leveling the playing field in energy. The bill will charge fossil fuel companies a carbon fee and suggests several options for returning the money to the public. The best option, it seems to me, is to pay it directly to us citizens, because that puts the money back into the economy. Ken Deveney, Ashland Be thoughtful and fair It’s easy and natural to be angry and righteous. We believe what we believe and when we encounter dissonance, we react. Heck, if our ancestors had taken the time to commune with predators, we might not even be here. But that was then and this is now. It’s hard and unnatural to be thoughtful and fair. With everyone having different beliefs, everything that any one of us believes can’t possibly be true. What if, rather than reacting to dissonance, we reflect? What if we didn’t all always have to be right? What if new input could empower us to review and perhaps even revise our beliefs? Until one of us can demonstrate our perfection (I have no candidates), the path of inflexible beliefs will lead to a world of irresolvable conflict. Dennis Q. Murphy, Ashland Support the SOU pool My daughter, a local high school student, has benefited greatly from her participation in both water polo and swimming. These tremendously physical sports build strength, self-confidence and discipline, along with the sense of belonging. And when someone finds that “their sport” is in the pool, the thought of permanently losing that asset is troubling, to say the least. Recently my family and I counted at least a dozen teams and organizations that will find themselves without a home, if the SOU pool is left out of remodeling plans. I urge you to speak up in support of the SOU pool, before it is too late.
