A drought was declared before fire season even began this year, and the frightening lack of snowpack in the higher elevations means fuels are drier than usual for this time of year. Reservoirs are perilously low. Residents — that means owners or renters — have until Monday, June 15 to complete weed abatement. City rules require weeds to be cut back to no more than 4 inches in height and maintained at that height throughout the summer on the entire property if it is 1 acre or less. Residents of properties of 1 acre or more are required to mow vegetation to that length within 30 feet of  structures and a buffer strip 15 feet wide around the edges of the lot. The city has a fire evacuation plan should a wildfire threaten homes. Listen to the radio at 1700 AM for updates, or call 541-552-2490 for information on fires burning in Ashland and the surrounding area. In the Oakland Hills Fire of 1991 wind-driven flames consumed 790 homes an hour. That's 13 every minute. Ashland's topography and vegetation are similar.
