Maybe not much at first glance, but if your high school gives you more points for the B in the AP class, that means a higher grade point average, which could be worth thousands of scholarship dollars, especially at the University of Oregon. Ashland High School officials are implementing a weighted GPA system this year. While it's logical for them to do that, it's unfortunate that it should be necessary. Many colleges toss out the weighted GPA and consider only the unweighted average when deciding admissions and determining scholarship eligibility, but not all do, and the UO is one that doesn't. Oregon State University may follow suit as well. So an Ashland graduate with AP courses is at automatic disadvantage when competing with students who have weighted GPAs. Time was, a GPA was a GPA: An A was worth 4 points, a B was worth 3 and so on. A college admissions or scholarship office could look at an applicant's transcript to see how challenging the courses were. Weighted GPAs typically assign 5 points for an A and 4 for a B. Ashland High will continue to use an unweighted GPA for determining class rank and valedictorians, and that's as it should be. A well-rounded education does not consist only of high-level academic courses. It's unfortunate that UO officials apparently don't have the same attitude.
