COLLEGE FOOTBALL Raiders take down No. 2 Carroll Mason runs for 202 yards, defense denies Saints late in Frontier Conference thriller By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 6, 2014 @ 6:27 pm Updated Sep 6, 2014 at 8:25 PM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 6, 2014 @ 6:27 pm Updated Sep 6, 2014 at 8:25 PM » Social News His team may put up gaudy passing numbers, but Southern Oregon head coach Craig Howard says running a balanced offense has always been the goal. On Saturday, against a team known for making life miserable on opposing offenses, the Raiders made their coach proud. No. 22 Southern Oregon used a balanced offense to claw its way back from an 11-point second-half deficit then recovered a fumble on No. 2 Carroll College’s last-gasp drive to clinch a 38-35 victory in a thrilling Frontier Conference opener at Walter A. Phillips Field. When Carroll’s Dustin Rinker plowed into the end zone on fourth-and-1 to give the Saints a 35-24 lead early in the third quarter the visitors had all the momentum. But Southern Oregon came right back with an 80-yard drive capped by Melvin Mason’s own fourth-down plunge, and reclaimed the lead on Austin Dodge’s 22-yard pass to 6-foot-6 Portland State transfer Victor Dean with seven seconds to go in the third. Carroll twice penetrated SOU territory in the fourth quarter, but Colter Hamel shanked a 44-yard field goal with 9:20 to go and Alex Stork recovered Mac Roche’s fumble with 2:59 left on the clock, giving the Raiders their biggest regular-season victory since the last time these two teams met in Ashland, in 2012. Southern Oregon’s offense was almost perfectly balanced, gaining 281 yards through the air and 280 yards on the ground. Mason rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns, including an electrifying 40-yard gallop in the second, and true freshman Keegan Lawrence added 71 yards on nine carries. “We burned them with some deep balls two years ago,” Howard said. “Since that moment on, their great defensive staff said that’s not going to happen to us anymore, and they’re going to play a defense that’s going to take away those deep throws. So, again, it opens up the run game a little bit. We are a balanced offense, even though people don’t think we are. It’s that old saying: ‘Take advantage of what they give you.’ And they were giving us some stuff that we felt we could take advantage of in the run game.” Dodge completed 21 of 30 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns without a pick, and Ryan Retzlaff and Dylan Young combined for 177 yards receiving. Roche completed 20 of 32 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns, and also scored on a 17-yard run to cut SOU’s lead to 24-21 with 4:22 to go in the second quarter. Rinker rushed for 147 yards and one score. Southern Oregon looked like it could run away with the game after Dodge threw a 47-yard touchdown strike to Young, giving the Raiders a 24-14 lead with 7:01 to go in the second. But the Saints used two clutch drives at the end of the half to reclaim the momentum and the lead, capping the second on a Roche to Anthony Clarke touchdown pass with 11 seconds to go. Rinker’s blast from the 1 with 9:26 to go in the third capped a 90-yard drive for the Frontier Conference favorites. Stork led Southern Oregon’s defense with 8 ½ tackles, while Laure Calcagno added 6 ½. The Raider defense surrendered 458 yards of total offense, but only 61 in the fourth quarter. Howard said SOU’s next challenge is to build on the win and avoid complacency. “We have nine regular season games left,” he said, “so early in the year it helps because you’re not in the back seat, you’re in the front seat of the conference. But so are other people. “When the schedule came out and Carroll came up so early in the schedule that it could be really good for us or really bad for us, and right now I think it’s really good for us.”   By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 6, 2014 @ 6:27 pm Updated Sep 6, 2014 at 8:25 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Kaepernick's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2 Sep. 15, 2014 at 12:45 am Cutler, Jeffery's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2 Sep. 15, 2014 at 12:10 am Instant Week 2 Fantasy Recap Sep. 14, 2014 at 11:46 pm Fantasy Advice on Injured Week 2 Stars Sep. 14, 2014 at 10:56 pm Should Fantasy Owners Worry About Week 2 QB Duds?
