Rogue Valley Symphony Director Martin Majkut says the setting is ideal for the music planned for the outdoor concert. "The centerpiece of the concert is Antonio Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons.' We all know snippets," he says. "This is a rare opportunity to hear all of it — spring, summer, autumn and winter. It's gorgeous music and music that lends itself well to the outdoor setting." Polish-born and New York City-based violinist and recording artist Kinga Augustyn will be the featured soloist. The young virtuoso has earned rave reviews from the international press and performed across America, Europe and Asia. She's been called a “violinist for whom nothing seems too difficult” by the Polish Daily News, “stylish and vibrant …playing with verve and superb control …great sensitivity and unashamed virtuosity” by Strad Magazine, and “beyond amazing, one hell of a violinist, who has already made a name for herself in violin circles” by Fanfare Magazine. "What I love about her is she's a very involved player," Majkut says. "Her playing is so intense, you can't stop following her every gesture and listening to every note." The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, and the concert begins at 8 p.m. at Edenvale, 2310 Voorhies Road, Medford. Tickets are $36 and must be reserved by calling 541-552-6398 or visiting www.rvsymphony.com . Tickets will not be available at the door. Majkut himself will be playing the harpsichord with the orchestra using his left hand while conducting with his right hand and head cues. He grew up in Czechoslovakia at a time when left-handed children like him were forced to use their right hands. "I love being in the middle of the musicians," he says. "It makes me feel more connected to them, and it's twice as enjoyable because I'm playing and directing at the same time." Majkut often plays harpsichord with the orchestra when playing baroque music. In the 17th century, it was the harpsichordist or the first violinist who led the music. The symphony orchestra also will perform Ottorino Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances," Suite 3, which was inspired by Renaissance and Baroque music. Respighi's interest in Italian music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries led him to compose works inspired by the music of those periods. His Suite No. 3 was composed in 1932. It differs from the previous two suites in that it is arranged for strings only and somewhat melancholy in overall mood." Also look for Giacomo Puccini's "I Crisantemi," an elegy written in 1890 by the composer — in a single night — as a response to the death of the Duke of Savoy Amedeo di Savoia. The composition is scored for a string quartet, most frequently performed by a string orchestra. "It's a beautiful lament for a dear, lost friend," Majkut says, noting it will contrast with the more joyful music of "The Four Seasons." For people unsure about the etiquette of eating at an outdoor classical music concert, audience members should finish their food before the musicians begin to play.
