--> --> Dec. 10: Grizz girls beat Dogs in SOC tuneup; swimming wrapup NORTH BEND - The Ashland High girls basketball team improved to 2-3 on the year with a 55-46 victory at North Bend Saturday night. "We are starting to play better," Grizz head coach Stephanie Santos said. "We had some turnovers at the start of the game but we snapped out of it." The Grizzlies overcame the slow start and got hot in the fourth quarter to take command of the non-conference game. "It was a really physical game and they really hacked a lot and it wasn't called," Santos said. "But it was good to see our girls play through it." Junior post Julia Sobolik led the Grizzlies with a career-high 14 points. "Julia was awesome," Santos said. "Inside, posting up, rebounding, she was doing it all." Junior Marla Morin added 11 points, while freshman point guard Alysse Carlson chipped in with 10. The Grizzlies now prep for Friday's Southern Oregon Conference opener with South Medford at the Mountain Avenue gym. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. Ashland Swimming At Ashland, the Grizz swim teams finished second to mighty Roseburg at a three-way meet Saturday at the Southern Oregon University swimming pool. The Roseburg boys scored 119 points to easily outdistance Ashland (64) and Crater (23). It was almost the same on the girls side as Roseburg came away with 120 points, followed by Ashland (57) and Crater (40). Ashland senior Brad Scoles splashed to first place finishes in the 100 freestyle (49.38) and the 200 freestyle (1:52.39). Teammate Chris Brown was the only other Grizz boy with a first place finish as he won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.51). On the girls side Lila Little was the lone Grizz to win as she raced to the blue ribbon in the 500 freestyle (6:23.10). Ashland will host Eagle Point and South Medford at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the SOU pool. Email your...
