ScienceWorks, working closely with the Junior League of Jackson County, is hosting its first major fundraiser. "The Science of Wine" takes place on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m., and is billed as an interactive exploration of the science of winemaking and an artistic celebration of pairing delicious wines with fantastic foods. Many of Southern Oregon's finest wines will be featured at "The Science of Wine," a fund-raising event at ScienceWorks Saturday. Satsuki Doi / Ashland Daily Tidings Christy Wallace-Hostetler, the museum's executive director, said hosting fund-raiser with wines as its main focus was a natural. "I think many people, when they think fund-raiser, think of wine and cheese type of events," she noted. "We are not particularly set for a sit-down dinner, but for an event where you can walk around, and yet, we wanted our event to be educational. We wanted it to explore something and connect to the science world. We want to have fun and at the same time use this as an opportunity to learn something about the world around us." The event offers wine enthusiasts the opportunity to meet and talk one-on-one with the area's best winemakers, wine growers, and restaurateurs. One area to be explored will be the taste of wine and how foods affect a wine's taste. "We will have a taste station that demonstrates how food affects wine," Wallace-Hostetler said. "What we don't always realize is that that pairing really dramatically changes how the wine tastes to us and how the food tastes. We will do some different experiments where you will take a bite of something sweet or sour and then tasting the wine to see what happens." The evening will also feature brief informational seminars from wine industry experts, music from jazz combo Charley Pagani and Friends, and a silent auction with prizes that include lots of wine, theater tickets, lift tickets, get-aways and a private birthday party package at ScienceWorks. ScienceWorks is working with winemaker Kara Dondero, Greg Jones from SOU's Geography Department, Michael Donovan from Roxy Ann Winery, and the Southern Oregon Winegrowers Association to create the exhibits. Participating wineries include Abacella, Ashland Vineyards & Winery, Bridgeview Vineyards & Winery, Henry Estate, Eden Valley Orchards, Foris, Granite Peak, Roxy Ann Winery, Valley View and Wooldridge Creek. Restaurants will include Allyson's of Ashland, Amuse, Bambu, Chateaulin, Cucina Biazzi and Tabu. Other delicious morsels will include cheeses from Rogue Creamery and chocolate from Dagoba Chocolates. "This event is a little different from your typical wine tasting," Allyson Holt, Junior League committee member and owner of Allyson's of Ashland, said. "Learning how our tongue tastes wine, or how wine is actually made is not only fascinating but also gives an even greater appreciation for what's in your glass. And if while I'm learning, I can also taste great wines and fabulous food, that's even better." Tickets are $30 for ScienceWorks Members and $35 for nonmembers. The event will be held at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum, 1500 E. Main Street, where the newest exhibition, "Take Flight," is on display. Tickets are available at ScienceWorks, Allyson's of Ashland and Papillon Rouge in Medford. More information is available by calling 482-6767.
