--> --> Pirates score upset win over Henley PHOENIX - Phoenix High sophomore receiver Martin Gonzalez caught a pair of touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a 14-12 upset of Skyline Conference power Henley Friday night at Jack Woodward Stadium. Gonzalez hauled in a 9-yard pass from quarterback Ross Ellis to give the Pirates an early 8-0 lead. The sure-handed receiver answered the call again in the fourth quarter as his 38-yard TD catch helped the Pirates overcome a 12-8 Hornet advantage. The victory moved Phoenix to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play, one game behind North Valley for first in the conference. Phoenix travels to winless Rogue River next Friday, while Henley hosts North Valley. SOU Volleyball At Monmouth, the Western Oregon Wolves outlasted the Raiders in a two-hour, 20-minute marathon non-conference match between the two former Cascade Conference foes. The Wolves won 28-30, 31-29, 30-15, 23-30, 15-12. The loss dropped SOU to 13-6 overall, while Western improved to 10-9 on the season. The Raiders were led by Kristina Matchett's 25 kills and 19 digs. Senior setter Sabrina Garboden added 19 digs, while April Lowe chipped in with 18. SOU had 100 team digs in the match. SOU returns to conference action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Northwest at McNeal Pavilion. Email your...
