Letters to the editor: Teachers say thank you for passing levy Dear Editor, On behalf of the teachers of the Ashland School District, I'd like to thank the voters of Ashland for their renewal of the Youth Activity Levy. I cannot express how grateful it feels to be able to work in a community that really cares about the schools and their children's futures. So many thanks also need to go to those dedicated community volunteers who worked long hours to help pass the Activity Levy. These include students, parents, district employees, school board members and concerned citizens. I want to thank those voters who received our phone calls and personal visits and hope they realize that our reminders were meant as calls for help, not as criticism. The "yes" on our local levy is just one "skirmish" for our schools. Our "battle" is in Salem, and I encourage all of you to voice your concerns to Senator Lenn Hannon and Representative Alan Bates. They need our support as they continue to work toward finding solutions to adequate and stable funding for education. Leeanne R. Wallace, Ashland Education Association President Oregon must go Major League To the Editor: During the past week, my brother and I treated our dad to a Seattle Mariners game, as we do every year as a Father's Day gift. The tickets, refreshments, meals, fuel and other expenses from our trip added nearly $300 to the economy of the State of Washington, and subtracted the same amount from Oregon's economy. Moreover, as a result of the "multiplier effect," the goods and services we purchased in the State of Washington will produce even greater economic benefits to our neighbors to the north. Multiply this by the many thousands of Oregonians who attend Mariners games, and you will get an idea of the enormous positive economic impact which the Mariners have on the economy of the State of Washington. Once Oregon has its own MLB team, these dollars will stay in Oregon, and - what's more - this will become a destination for baseball fans from near and far. Getting a Major League Baseball franchise could be just the boost that our economy needs to lift us out of the malaise we are in now. HB 3606 has been carefully drafted to protect the state from being on the hook for any of the costs of stadium construction. The time for Oregon to become Major League has arrived. Mark C.
