The decision was a welcome contrast to the still-contentious debate over a public art sculpture intended to grace the Gateway Island just south of downtown. The city's Beautification Committee recommended replacing the existing painted wooden signs with new, up-to-date markers to welcome visitors. The council agreed, and directed Ashland's Public Art Commission to oversee the project. The commission — the same hard-working but much-maligned group of volunteers who chose the "Gather" sculpture — presented the three designs for the welcome signs to council members. True to form when it comes to any municipal exercise in creative expression, online commenters wasted no time in criticizing the proposed designs. In particular, some questioned the use of a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters in the word "Ashland." On Tuesday, Councilor Carol Voisin asked whether the playful typography choice would set a bad example for schoolchildren. We are confident that viewing the quirky new signs will not cause Ashland's young people to begin turning in class assignments in a mix of small and capital letters. The council apparently agreed, approving the design 5-1. The attractive designs feature the immediately recognizable outline of Mount Ashland and the ridge lines that frame Ashland. The signs will be installed in May at the north, south and east entrances to the city. We're confident that residents and visitors will find the signs an attractive addition.
