Fox News’ Chris Wallace and radio talk show host Mike Gallagher are the latest to slam the original “American Idol.” Gallagher said, “Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up!” To which Wallace replied, “She could stay off the deep-dish pizza for a little bit.” Are these guys that bored they need to pick on one of our best singers? I’m upset this is considered newsworthy. Clarkson is one of my favorites. She’s a sweetheart and one heck of a talented singer. She does not deserve this kind of treatment, let alone by a fruitcake like Wallace. If they’re looking for anything newsworthy about Clarkson, why don’t they search the top 20 singles charts from all around the world? If they did, they’d see Clarkson is on all of them with her latest hit “Heartbeat Song.” The song appears on Top 20 lists from here to Australia and back. The only other artists who can claim that distinction right now are Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson with their megahit “Uptown Funk.” Since winning “American Idol” 13 years ago, Clarkson has been hard at work, recording numerous hit songs and albums and touring the globe. She took little time for herself. As fate would have it, she fell in love a couple years back with Brandon Blackstock. The two were married a short time later, and it became known that Kelly was with child. It was a happy time for her. She also became mother of Blackstock’s two children. It was a role she had waited her whole life to experience. Even while pregnant, Clarkson managed to record one of the most successful Christmas albums in years. She also put out a greatest hits album, featuring three new singles. Late last summer, Clarkson gave birth to a beautiful daughter she named River Rose. She looked so happy. As most women experience, she put on a few pounds during pregnancy. It’s normal. If anything, it proves Clarkson is more relatable to fans than we thought. She’s human, for God’s sake. Give the girl a break! Shortly after plans to release her latest album, “Piece By Piece,” Clarkson began to encounter fierce scrutiny from the media. What was to be her return to music quickly turned into a weight debate. British TV personality Katie Hopkins was the first to throw a punch. “Piece By Piece” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 200. The album is excellent, perhaps containing some of Kelly’s best music to date and that is saying a lot. She’s a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who happens to be loved by her fans. She may say news like this doesn’t bother her, but she’s human. Wallace, Gallagher, Hopkins and everyone else talking trash ought to feel ashamed. Clarkson deserves better. David T.
