Ashland is known as a theater town. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival does a wonderful job each year but small local theater brings a different experience, more up-close and more personal. With Jeannine Grizzard heading up ACT, Richard Heller heading up Theatre Convivio and Peter Wickliffe heading up Thanks for the Memories, theater needs a real space here in Ashland. Not all directors and actors can be part of OSF, but they need and deserve a place to show off their talent and love of theater. I have attended plays at each of the three theater companies and have always walked away impressed with the acting talent and how so much can be presented in often a makeshift space. And it’s great to spend $10 or $15 dollars to see a wonderful performance. If the three theaters could come together and have a long-range plan to raise money and plan a year’s worth of plays, in time, a real theater space could be more than a dream. I would like to thank all those who work so hard to bring Ashland good local theater. Phil Loveless Ashland Stop LNG The decision about whether the liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline is built is in the balance. No permits for this project have been issued. There is still the opportunity to save our Southern Oregon counties from major environmental damage: the LNG plant disfiguring Coos Bay, the 232-mile pipeline scarring forests and private property, crossing 400 rivers and streams and disrupting fish and wildlife habitat. Join the “Stop LNG” movement at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in Bear Creek Park, Medford. Bring a sign, but most of all bring yourself and lots of friends. It’s vital to keep the pressure on our elected officials. Let’s make a loud and serious noise. See you there. Jan Waitt Ashland Wyden unreachable For two consecutive days I called Sen. Ron Wyden’s Medford office to voice my opposition to the “fast track” procedure for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement (TPP). Even after the adverse consequences of NAFTA and other trade agreements, TPP is being crafted in secret, and with “fast track” authority it would simply be put before Congress for an up-or-down vote, with no debate or opportunity for amendment. Leaked accounts of the negotiations indicate that amendments would surely be needed, as TPP will likely have provisions detrimental to workers and the environment, but favorable to international corporations — especially the means for corporations to sue governments to nullify environmental or labor laws and thus guarantee profits. Each day when I got to the end of the telephone options at Senator Wyden’s office, I was informed by recording that I would be unable to leave a message because the message box was  full . So each day I sent an email, and each day it was returned as undeliverable because the senator’s inbox was  full . This is an unacceptable frustration of the democratic communication between an elected official and his constituents. What is Senator Wyden's position on “fast track”? And why is his office so impregnable to communication from those he serves? Jack Seybold Ashland Climate bill needs help Oregon House Bill 3470, the Climate Stability and Justice Act, caps greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with goals established by HB 3542, approved in 2007 without enabling programs. It needs help. The way to have a positive impact on HB 3470 is to contact as many of your political representatives as you can. In the past, I have said that we cannot wait for the politicians to act. It's up to us; we need to act by contacting them now. The key targets are members of the House Energy and Environmental Committee, your regional representatives, and members of the House and Senate leadership team. They need encouragement from us to act on behalf of both us and future generations. You may be frightened to learn that for a livable planet, we must stay under 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit of warming, a limit we will overshoot if we fail to act with urgency. Think about making contact and picture your children and grandchildren; the way we live now can be improved. We should not allow the fossil fuel corporations to destroy their future.
