The eighth-ranked and second-seeded Southern Oregon women's basketball team (23-8 overall) hosts fifth-seeded Oregon Tech (21-10) at 7 p.m. inside Bob Riehm Arena in the semifinal round of the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank. When the teams met for the tournament title last March 3 in Klamath Falls, it was the Raiders who needed a win for an automatic berth in the 32-team NAIA Championships, while the Owls were a virtual lock to receive, at worst, an at-large bid. OIT won, 88-72, and marched on as SOU stayed home. Now the pressure is off the Raiders, who do not appear to be at risk of falling far enough in the rankings to be kept out of the national tournament, which runs March 11-17 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Owls, on the other hand, will be in desperation mode. And in order to advance they'll have to find a way to stop SOU's 17-game home winning streak. "I think the game has been easier for us the last couple months because our defense has picked up," SOU coach Lynn Kennedy said. "That's improved tempo. When you get stops and have that momentum, it makes your offense a lot better, so we need to maintain that mindset." Playoff picture: SOU pummeled No. 7 seed College of Idaho from the opening tip in Tuesday's quarterfinal round, leading 27-4 through the first 10 minutes on its way to a 78-63 victory. Oregon Tech advanced with a 69-62 upset at fourth-seeded Evergreen behind Karly LeVeque's 20 points. Megan Whetstone scored nine of her 13 in the closing minutes as the Owls overcame a 57-51 deficit with 4:33 left. In the other quarterfinals, top-seeded Eastern Oregon held on to beat Concordia (70-63) and sixth-seeded Northwest Christian went ahead in the final seconds to upset third-seeded Corban (60-59). EOU will host NCU on Friday night in La Grande. EOU, ranked 17th, has already clinched a spot in the national tournament by winning the CCC's regular-season title. If the Mountaineers bounce Northwest Christian, they'll host the championship game at 7 p.m. Monday. No team has won back-to-back tournament titles since SOU did it in 2002 and '03. The Raiders last won the tourney in 2008. Head-to-head : The Raiders swept their regular-season series with the Owls for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Their 89-78 win on Jan. 17 was the result of 12 unanswered points that broke open a 67-67 game with eight minutes remaining, as Alexi Smith scored 26 points and Ashley Claussen recorded 19 points and nine assists. Most recently, SOU won 84-54 on Feb. 14 in Ashland. Smith dominated again with 22 points, and Claussen made her first five 3-point attempts to propel the Raiders to a 53-26 halftime lead. SOU is 7-1 against the Owls at Riehm Arena since dropping an 80-55 decision in the 2007 quarterfinals. That and last year's finale stand as the only postseason meetings the teams have had. OIT leads the all-time series, 34-31, and the Raiders will be going for their first three-game sweep of the Owls since the 1979-80 campaign. Quick hits : • Five Raiders scored in double figures in the win over C of I, led by Claussen's 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. They've put at least four players in double figures 18 times this seasons. • Make it nine straight SOU opponents who have shot 36 percent or worse. The Raiders have held 22 of their last 25 under the 40-percent mark and have only been bested from the field once this season. • Kristen Schoenherr, who was No. 1 during conference play with a 56-percent mark from 3-point range, has made 11 of her last 18 attempts from downtown and scored 10 or more points in four straight games. • Claussen dished out seven assists Tuesday, bringing her total to 148 this season. She needs 18 more to crack the top-five in SOU single-season history. • Claussen also hit three triples against the Coyotes, giving her three or more in nine of SOU's last 14 contests. She has 57 3-point makes this season after connecting on 47 her first two seasons combined. • SOU's three-post rotation of Carly Meister, Courtney West and Smith is shooting a combined 57 percent from the floor. • In terms of NAIA rankings, the Raiders are No. 2 in rebounding margin (plus-12.6), No. 3 in assists per game (18.8), No. 4 in field-goal percentage (47.4), and No. 5 in scoring margin (plus-20.3), 3-point percentage (36.3) and points per game (84.4). • SOU's last nine home wins have been decided by an average of 26.1 points. About Oregon Tech : The Owls come in riding a three-game win streak that started after they'd lost five of six. All five starters put up between 8.7 and 11.7 points, led by LeVeque, but their bread and butter has been on the defensive end. Opponents are shooting 35.7 percent from the field and just 30 from beyond the arc, though SOU is hitting at 45.5 percent against the Owls this season and their last four opponents have gone a combined 25-of-50 from 3-point range. OIT ranks 20th in the NAIA in 3-point percentage (34.0). "It's going to come down to our defensive effort," Kennedy said. "We have to be able to guard shooters, protect the basket and rebound. OIT is a confident team right now and they know this is their chance."
