No, the killers were motivated by the demands of their totalitarian political religion, Islam, which tolerates zero diversity of thought about Allah or Mohammed, zero satire, zero separation of church and state. Mr. Rothschild blamed the cartoonists for their own deaths. Christians may not like the artwork entitled "Piss Christ," but they tolerate it. Jews might not like the Jew-hating cartoon contest currently being held in Tehran, but they tolerate it. Unless one is racist, why should any of us presume that Muslims can't be rational and tolerate mockery — like all other religions seem to be able to do? Why lower the bar for their behavior? Are they not human? Yes, France has legislated strict laws for the separation of church and state. Immigrants coming to start new lives must be aware of these laws and choose to come to France anyway. France is an open and free society. It is the Muslim population that has a problem tolerating such openness. Polling worldwide demonstrates that the majority of Muslims prefer to live under Sharia law. Sharia law, as written in the Koran, and as we are seeing carried out by ISIS, gives non-Muslims two choices: convert or die. Nonviolent communication is a wonderful concept. It has behind it the notion of simply meeting the other person's needs and peace will be at hand. Ask the Yazidis and Christians being slaughtered, raped and enslaved throughout the Middle East how nonviolent communication might work for them. Their very existence is intolerable to the Islamic State. Diversity is also a wonderful concept. Tolerating diversity of opinion, to me at least, seems like a very worthwhile goal. I prefer to ignore skin color, sexual orientatio and ethnicity and tolerate people based on their behavior — specifically, how they treat others and what they contribute to the world. Mr. Rothschild states that "right-wing people" are the people he has the most difficulty tolerating. "They teach me very little" he says, and "what they assert deeply offends me." Well, then, by deeply offending Mr. Rothschild, according to his logic, aren't right-wing people asking for trouble? Maynard Telpner Talent Watch Klamath film “A River Between Us”, a film about the Klamath River Basin, was shown at the Ashland Independent Film Festival in April. This film should be mandatory viewing by all legislators and anyone having an issue that needs to be solved. It shows how two groups with widely different agendas can work together to solve a difficult problem, each side respecting the other. Please take the time to go to the Varsity theater in Ashland to see this powerful film. And ask your legislator to go with you. It plays until Thursday, June 4. Jerry Kenefick Ashland Bear has a twin While watching a Vin Scully-announced Dodger game, I turned outside our kitchen bay window to a furred ursine mammal, looking somewhat like a hair-covered VW. After yelling at the bear to scoot, I followed at a safe distance, camera in hand. The bear wandered up into the woods, tearing apart decayed timbers, looking for grubs and termites to snack on, when it turned — toward me — and eye-to-eye, stared and snorted — oh, yeah — feet, do your stuff! How fast can I move backward without threatening this Jurassic Park bear? By the way — it's got a twin sibling!
