Frequent visitors sometimes hear that the water once drained out of the lake, but few know what really happened. During the dry year of 1926, Lake of the Woods was lower than it had ever been in anyone’s memory and was dropping at the alarming rate of an inch a day. Since there is no stream flowing out of the lake, people were not sure what was draining the lake. In late August the cause was discovered. The water level got so low people could see a deep fissure through which water from the lake was pouring, and the lake level was dropping faster than usual because the dry weather caused inlet streams to dry up. Folks clamored to have the fissure filled in. Hugh Rankin, supervisor of the Crater National Forest, suggested they would close the fissure with crushed rock and clay. He said there had always been the same amount of water running out of the lake through the fissure, but less coming into the lake in 1926. Rankin warned that closing the fissure would cause the lake to rise several feet higher than normal in wetter years.
