ASHLAND Missing teen's mom hopes for safe return Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Dec. 3, 2014 @ 2:00 am Updated Dec 3, 2014 at 11:25 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Dec. 3, 2014 @ 2:00 am Updated Dec 3, 2014 at 11:25 AM » RELATED CONTENT • One of two missing Ashland girls found in Northern Califo... • One of two runaway Ashland teens may be with California man • Two missing Ashland teens planned to run away, police say • Help sought finding missing juvenile » Social News If Jamie Daugherty could somehow get in touch with her daughter, missing Ashland teen Hannah Thomas-Garner, her message would be a simple plea. “I would tell her that I love her very much and that we can work through anything,” Daugherty said. “She has a safe home to come back to.” It’s been a long three days for Daugherty, 38, since she discovered Sunday morning that Thomas-Garner, who turned 17 in October, wasn’t at home and her car missing. Police have since pieced together at least part of the puzzle. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department recovered Thomas-Garner's car — a 2012 Ford Focus — around midnight Sunday. Department spokeswoman Jayme Lynch said police still have the car in their possession and that it has been processed for fingerprints and DNA evidence. Lynch declined to comment on the area the car was found or its condition. She said county search and rescue volunteers will be back in the area doing a second canvassing for anything they may have missed. According to press releases sent out by the Ashland Police Department Tuesday, Thomas-Garner had been planning to run away with two teenage girls, is hitchhiking her way south via Interstate 5 and was described as “healthy” and “in good spirits” by a man who gave her a ride Monday. The man, described by police as a credible witness, said he gave Thomas-Garner a ride from Mt. Shasta City, where her car was found abandoned, to a coffee shop in Dunsmuir, Calif. That was at 10 a.m. Monday. An hour later, a second witness said he saw a person matching Thomas-Garner’s description hitchhiking in the Dunsmuir area. APD’s latest release, sent out Tuesday night, reported that another tip led to surveillance video that may show Thomas-Garner entering a mini-mart in Redding, Calif. at 7 a.m. Tuesday. The video couldn’t be sent electronically, but video stills were passed along and Thomas-Garner’s stepdad, Mark Daugherty, believes that the person in the picture is probably Thomas-Garner. Jamie Daugherty isn’t so sure. “I saw the picture and I’m not really convinced that it’s her,” she said. “There are definitely some similarities, but it’s difficult to tell.” APD’s latest release also revealed that one of the girls that had planned to run away with Thomas-Garner, Sylvia Davis, has also been reported as a runaway by her parents. When Daugherty first noticed that her daughter was missing she didn’t panic. Since Thomas-Garner had never tried to run away before and didn’t seem to have a motive to do so Sunday, Daugherty didn’t contact police, she said, until three hours later — and that was after she had already called the hospital, the jail and “all the other places that she might be.” “I definitely didn’t go to running away,” she said. “I went to, out at a party and overslept. I really had no idea what was happening because it’s very uncharacteristic. “I honestly don’t know, and I’m sure if I ever find out I will be shocked at what her reasoning is.” Daugherty said the fact that she has since learned that Thomas-Garner left voluntarily doesn’t provide much comfort because, “she’s still facing a tremendous amount of danger, and where she’s at right now she’s under her own free will but that doesn’t mean she will be in the next hour.” Thomas-Garner does have some experience traveling alone, Daugherty said, mostly through airports. But she isn’t what Daugherty would call street smart and could be lured into a dangerous situation. Police believe Thomas-Garner is headed to the Fresno area or “someplace warm,” which could mean another 330 miles of hitchhiking. “She’s not experienced,” Daugherty said. “Maybe being gullible, she could be tricked into somebody’s car that she may trust, or being desperate she could make even worse decisions.” Those are the types of scenarios that have made daily life for Daugherty a challenge since Thomas-Garner disappeared. Daugherty only worked a fraction of a shift at her job on Tuesday. Getting things done, she discovered, actually provided temporary relief in the form of a distraction. But that only goes so far. “At the same time, trying to multitask is very difficult,” she said, “and trying to get each thing my 100 percent attention is impossible.” Thomas-Garner is described as 5-feet-6, 137 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. Davis, also an Ashland resident, is 5 feet 9 inches tall, 105 pounds. She has hazel eyes and recently dyed her dreadlocks black, although she is blond in a photo released Tuesday. According to the APD, she may have arranged to have an unidentified man pick her up in Ashland. Ashland police Deputy Chief Corey Falls said the case has already drawn interest from several media outlets outside Oregon, including Nancy Grace and CBS News.
