Letters to the editor: Bush and cronies hid behind wall of patriotism Thank you for the insightful commentary by Donald Walsh in your August 18, 2003 edition about the Bush administration's use of assassination and "bounty hunters" in his "war against terrorism." I am constantly amazed how we continue to allow this man and his cronies to abuse the laws of our land so blatantly. And still his job rating remains high. He has proven himself as an ineffectual economist, a blatant war-mongerer and one of the most arrogant representatives of the United States in my lifetime. And yet, because of this phony wall of "patriotism" he has built, there is a very good chance that he will be reelected in 2004. What has happened to our sense of morality and common sense? A few years ago, we had a president who lied about cheating on his wife, a situation that hurt no one except Clinton and his family, and he was impeached. Today, we have a president who out and out lies about the reasons for going to war in Iraq, which results in thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and children and hundreds of American servicepeople being killed and maimed, and George W. Bush goes to church on Sunday, prays to God and arrogantly smirks at the camera as if he were some sort of hero. Why aren't we screaming? Why isn't Congress calling for his impeachment, and most importantly, why does he continue to get the support of so many Americans? Why? Second, in empathy and mourning for those killed, and their families, in Iraq, Africa, Israel, Palestine and other countries that don't have peace. Third, to remind others that war has never been a solution for our world's problems, and the billions of dollars it costs could have made positive changes for all. Fourth, for myself. Standing with other women on the plaza every Friday at noon makes me feel I am making a statement. It helps, a little. I believe the environmental impact is small, not damaging; the need for outside activities is increasing, the opportunity is here and now, and the significance increase of business is not to be missed.
