AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL Mustangs arrive in N.C. for World Series Medford in pool with defending champs, Hawaii By Kris Henry For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Kris Henry For the Tidings Posted Aug. 12, 2015 @ 7:42 am By Kris Henry For the Tidings Posted Aug. 12, 2015 @ 7:42 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Two weeks on the road has only made the Medford Mustangs hopeful for one thing: a third full week away from their hometown. It’s not that the local boys don’t want to hang out with their friends and family in Southern Oregon, they just have a clear goal in mind and don’t want to walk away from their opportunity American Legion AAA World Series any earlier than necessary. The Mustangs open the national championship tournament at 9:30 a.m. PDT Thursday against Brooklawn (N.J.) Post 72 in Shelby, N.C. Medford’s road trip began two weeks ago when it claimed the state title in Salem and, without returning home, the Mustangs ventured to Cheyenne, Wyo., for the Northwest Regional and took that top prize Sunday. They secured the program’s first trip to the World Series since 2009, when Medford finished as runner-up. The Mustangs spent the night in Colorado on Monday and flew to Chicago at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday before winding up in Shelby that afternoon. “It’s not easy staying in a hotel with the same people for two weeks, and we hope to make it three,” said Mustangs manager Nate Mayben, “but these guys have been amazing. Everybody has been doing a great job of getting along and I think that really says a lot about what kind of team we have and the bond they have.” The Mustangs (42-13) open pool play against Brooklawn (44-4), the two-time defending champion. “They’re a very good program and have been there for years and years,” said Mayben. “They’ll be a fun opponent to play the first game. Everything is obviously going to be new for us and not a whole lot new to them, but we’re just excited to get back there and get to play those guys right off the bat.” Brooklawn came up with four runs in the top of the 10th inning Sunday to defeat Red Land (Pa.), 7-3, in the championship game of the Mid-Atlantic Regional. Post 72 was undefeated in the regional but twice needed extra innings to beat Red Land. In the title game, Dave Strout, Sean Breen and Anthony Harrold each had two hits and Ray Taylor added two RBIs. Brooklawn batted .310 in the regional and posted a tourney-best 1.60 ERA. Individually, Breen led the way by batting .471 with six runs and four RBIs, but the team depth was evident thanks to the efforts of Harrold (.429, five runs, eight RBIs, five doubles), Strout (.429, six runs, three RBIs), Dante Scafidi (.389) and Tyler Mondile (.333, two runs, five RBIs). Lucas Rollins led New Jersey’s pitching by tossing a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and one walk, while Mondile allowed one run in a three-hitter and Joe Bobiak allowed two runs — one earned — in his eight-inning effort, scattering seven hits. Under the World Series format adopted last year, the Mustangs are in one of two four-team divisions. After three days of pool play, the winner of each division plays the runner-up from the opposite division in Monday’s semifinals. The winners of those games play Tuesday for the national championship. After facing Brooklawn on Thursday to open the Stars Division, the Mustangs play Central Plains Regional champion Millard, Neb., at 1 p.m. PDT Friday and Western Regional champion Waipahu of Hawaii at 9:30 a.m. PDT Saturday. Waipahu edged Medford in last year’s Northwest Regional final. “We have a pretty tough pool,” said Mayben, “but these guys really like to play good competition. They get up for those games against the teams they know are going to be great. I’m sure we’re going to be considered the underdog there because we’re one of the few teams there without any (recent) World Series experience, but I think the guys are really excited to go and compete against the best.” Regional champions in the Stripes Division include Cromwell, Conn. (Northeast), Chaplin/Newberry, S.C. (Southeast), New Orleans (Mid-South) and Midland/Berryhill, Mich. (Great Lakes). All games will be broadcast on ESPN3 through Sunday, with Monday’s and Tuesday’s games on ESPNU. In claiming the Northwest Regional crown, Medford batted .332 and its pitchers had a tournament-best 1.50 ERA. Micah Brown paced the offense by batting .444 with eight runs and two RBIs, while Bryce Rogan (.391, five runs, eight RBIs), Cole Carder (.381, five runs, two RBIs), Eric Carlson (.375, three runs, four RBIs) and Austin Zavala (seven RBIs) helped power the attack. On the mound, Cody Coggins was dynamic in three appearances, going 2-0 with one save and a 0.61 ERA. Jordan Ragan (1.17 ERA), Aaron Hutchinson (2.00 ERA) and Colton Westfall (3.52 ERA) also finished among the tournament leaders.
