--> --> A Lott of problems Last week, Senate Republican leader Trent Lott praised Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential run: "We voted for him. We are proud of him. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years either." Thurmond ran as a segregationist and said "All the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches." He opposed Truman's civil rights legislation. What is just as scary as the new voice of blatant racism by the Republican leadership, is the lack of response from the Democrats and the media.
