Ashland Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 29, 2016 at 8:11 PM Updated Jun 30, 2016 at 9:58 AM Posted Jun. 29, 2016 at 8:11 PM Updated Jun 30, 2016 at 9:58 AM »  Social News Fourth-graders are invited to attend a free BioBlitz event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, July 7th at Mount Ashland. BioBlitz, a program adapted from the National Geographic Society, is an event focused on identifying and recording as many species as possible over a short amount of time in a specific area. This program is aimed at getting kids outdoors to learn and play on their public lands, according to a release from the Rogue River-Sisikiyou National Forest. Participating fourth-graders should have an “Every Kid in the Park” pass the day of the event. Passes can be obtained for free by completing a simple online activity at www.everykidinapark.gov . Extra passes will be available at the event. The adult accompanying the fourth-grader to the event should download the free app iNaturalist to their smartphones before the event at www.inaturalist.org . Staff will also have smartphones, if the student does not have access to one. The app will be used to collect data found during the hike and record it to compare to data found in different seasons later this year. Participants are asked to bring a lunch, water, small backpack and sunscreen. Appropriate clothes and shoes should be worn to make the ascent from the Mount Ashland Ski Lodge to the top of the mountain. Online registration is available at bit.ly/295s2X7 . The event is sponsored by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, the Medford District Bureau of Land Management, Mt. Ashland Ski Area, Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, REI Medford and Siskiyou Mountain Club. A free shuttle departing from Shop’N Kart in Ashland at 9 a.m. is limited to nine people. To reserve a space or for more information, contact event coordinators Chamise Kramer at 541-618-2051 or Juanita Wright at 541-618-2113. June 30: This story has been updated to correct the day of the week on which the event occurs. −Local report DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 29, 2016 at 8:11 PM Updated Jun 30, 2016 at 9:58 AM » Comment or view comments   Reader Reaction »  STAY INFORMED   Email NewsLetter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
