Bandleader John Reischman attributes the success of the band's countless hours of touring together to "our own rooms," he says during a telephone interview from his home in Vancouver, B.C. He speaks passionately about the ongoing pleasures he finds performing and recording with the combo, and discusses what new surprises audiences might experience at live shows. “As always, it will be entertaining." he says. "There will be lots of great music mixed with humorous storytelling and a chance to see a group that still loves performing together. Our new CD and live sets reflect our ongoing coverage of vintage and traditional paired with original songs everyone in the band contributes.” Reischman and The Jaybirds will present two shows — one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. — Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Headwaters Room of the Geos Institute, 84 Fourth St., Ashland. The ensemble has five critically acclaimed albums to its credit, showcasing the group's stripped-down take various stylistic offerings that range from traditional bluegrass to contemporary lyrical journeys. Clearly, there is much inspiration for both the older and the newest material. “Much of our new sets are taken from our most recent CD, 'Vintage & Unique.' The title says it well. Inspiration comes from different places,” Reischman says. “The song 'The Cypress Hills' is inspired by novels written by Guy Vanderhaeghe about the border between Canada and the U.S. in the 1800s.” As a skillful ensemble, the fun The Jaybirds are having shines through in their music along with their commitment to keep carrying on an exceptional collaboration with mandolinist Reischman, guitarist Jim Nunally, bass player Trisha Gagnon, banjoist Nick Hornbuckle and fiddler Greg Spatz on fiddle. The entire group contributes to vocalization. With Reischman at the helm, there is great mutual respect among the band members, he says. “The group has a very identifiable sound, and we can all read the pulse," he says. "Given the many times we have come together to record and perform there is familiarity to build upon.”  Most multi-instrumental combos are natural springboards for improvisation, especially during live shows. “There are fixed musical passages in instrumentals, and some solos are repeated in a signature way. We leave open spaces to be fresh, so there is definitely improvisation during solos. Sometimes, we like to stretch out in certain places to see where it takes us. When you have worked together as long as we have, you know each other, so it’s easy for us to explore,” Reischman says. Among the many things that stand out about The Jaybirds is a female playing acoustic upright bass. Even with the recent popularity of Esperanza Spalding playing upright bass in the jazz genre, it still seems rare. “Trisha is a strong lead singer, and playing bass at the same time comes naturally to her,” Reischman says. “It’s more common in bluegrass to have a female acoustic bass player. The attack isn’t as heavy as jazz bass, and the patterns flow with the band.” With so many great singers and songwriters in the band, there's not really a formula for building harmonies. “When Trisha is singing, Jim and I sing below her. Sometimes Jim has the higher part, and sometimes it’s me. Because we are spread out geographically, it’s hard to get together for regular vocal practice, but we do like to sing together while traveling in the car.” Reischman says he chose the Geos Institute for a performance because, acoustically, it is a great room and lets the natural volume of the instruments be heard. "We’ve never played in Ashland," he says. "We do always stop there to eat when traveling through. I lived in Williams 25 years ago and would come into town to give mandolin lessons at Cripple Creek Music. I love the area with the orchards, vineyards and river country, much like where I grew up in Ukiah.
