- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Valley&State Backpage O&E Sports Archives Classifieds Faith&Beliefs Obituaries Revels July 16, 2004 Take the plan to Talent voters In an recent story ran in the Ashland Daily Tidings (July 5), Talent City Councilor Don Steyskal said that the proposed $5 million to $7 million dollar building project proposed for downtown Talent, included in addition to the new City Hall, a multipurpose facility, a much larger park, improved Home Street, a parking area for the new Civic Center and upgrades to the police station, as well as the New City Hall. Who has decided that the property owners in Talent either wanted or needed the above or can afford them? If I am not mistaken, three members of the committee that has been promoting this project don't live in Talent, so it won't cost them one penny, yet our young working families and retired people on a fixed income will bear the brunt of someone's pipe dream. Also, several landlords have told me that any increase in their taxes will be passed on to their renters. Let's just put this issue to the property owners and voters of Talent right now to see how much support you have for this project. Your figure of $262.00 per $100,000 of assessed value would cost someone with a $200,000 home about $44 a month for the next 20 years. Do you seriously think you can sell this to the residents of Talent? Bring it on. Don Rist Talent Bashers need to take 2nd look In response to "Too Noisy." Mr. Gillespie may have a point. Maybe the motorbikes in the parade were too loud. However, to even consider not allowing them in the parade next year is ludicrous. These kids were excited to be in our parade. These kids love dirt bike riding. Good kids from good families. They weren't beating a President Bush doll to death in our parade. God forbid noisy dirt bikes, but it is OK to kill President Bush in effigy. It seems to me your priorities might be a bit skewed! Whether you are a "Bush basher" or not, I think that we will all agree that killing a President Bush doll, (or any other President) in our parade is much more offensive than a bunch of good kids on noisy dirt bikes. Wake up! Michael Dauenhauer Ashland Time for change Wherever we look, we see disaster in our natural world, a great deal of it caused by George W. Bush and his companions. The air we breathe, the water we drink, our priceless old-growth forest, our national parks - this man seems to think he is above not only international law but also the laws of nature. Let us remove him from a position of control as soon as is humanly possible. Virginia C.
