Do they worship in complete silence? These are the two things people are most likely to think about when Quakers come to mind. The answer to the first question is yes. The answer to the second is no, although when people speak in Quaker Meetings, they speak out of the silence. Beginning Sunday, Jan. 25, South Mountain Friends Meeting in Ashland offers "Quakers 101," a seven-part course in the history, beliefs and practices of the Society of Friends. Subsequent classes will be held    from 9 to 10:30 a.m.   on the second and fourth Sundays of February, March, and April at the Meeting House, 543 S. Mountain Ave., at the corner of Ashland Street. The public is invited to attend any or all of the seven classes. They are also welcome to stay and experience Quaker worship at 11 a.m. Bob Morse, clerk of South Mountain Friends Meeting, explains that “to understand why nonviolence and seeking inspiration in the silence are so important to Quakers is to delve deeply into our beliefs and practices. They spring from our fundamental commitment to the sanctity of every human being and to the importance of personal encounter with Spirit.” Among the topics will be "Seekers and Finders: The Experience of Early Friends, The Light Within, and Quaker Testimonies (on nonviolence, simple living, etc.)." The first 30 minutes of each class will be devoted to a presentation of the subject matter; the remaining hour will be a facilitated discussion. “The first goal of Quakers 101 is to refresh and deepen our own Meeting’s appreciation of our faith and practice,” said Adam Thompson of the Adult Education Committee. “The second is to share our rich inheritance with the larger community.
