Larry Woodworth, of the Oregon State Police, said the weather was fairly mild in the Siskiyou Mountains and the traffic delay was due to a snow storm in Northern California. Oregon Department of Transportation officials said the California Highway Patrol asked them to close the highway at 8 p.m. on Sunday night. Vehicles, they said, were stopped at exit 14 in Oregon. Woodworth said ODOT set up a Red Cross center at the county fairgrounds in Central Point. He said there were some 80 vehicles parked there but none utilized the Red Cross center. Other cars and trucks, he said, parked at various trucks stops between Medford and Ashland. Traffic resumed over the Siskiyou Pass, travelling southbound, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Woodworth said. He expected northbound lanes in California to be opened at about 8 a.m. Chappy Herrera, a gas attendant at the AM/PM station near exit 14, said there were approximately 20 cars in the station’s parking lot when he arrived at work at 6 a.m. this morning. “Some were camping in their cars,” he said. “Some were just having coffee, waiting for the highway to open up.” He said the highway north of the exit 14 was lined with tractor trailer trucks. “It was backed up all the way to exit 19,” Herrera said. Mike Chehal, a truck driver on his way to Bakersfield, Calif., said he pulled over at about 8 p.m. on Sunday night. He parked his 18-wheeler behind the Pizza Hut on Ashland Street because, he said, the side of the highway was too busy.
