LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, March 5 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Mar. 5, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Mar 5, 2015 at 10:33 AM Posted Mar. 5, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated Mar 5, 2015 at 10:33 AM » Social News TPP's deceptive message "Partnership" is a nice, 21st-century term conjuring images of trust, honesty and mutual benefit. Perhaps that's why it's used in TPP, (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement). Do citizens benefit? If citizens benefit, why can't we view it? Why are our elected representatives prohibited from copying or sharing it with anyone? Pushed through using "fast track trade authority" (bypassing congressional responsibility), 20 years of economic damage from an earlier trade agreement, NAFTA, gutted U.S. manufacturing jobs and middle-class pay, and created income disparity, a $181 billion trade deficit (Mexico and Canada) and desperate migration of Mexican citizens. Currently, corporations from gas and oil, Big Pharma, agribusiness and their "think tanks" are pushing "fast track" with TPP. Citigroup and Bank of America gave multimillion-dollar bonuses to our negotiators when they joined the administration. Elizabeth Warren has cautioned, "… Wall Street, pharmaceuticals, telecom, big polluters and outsourcers are all salivating at the chance to rig the deal in the upcoming trade talks. So the questions is, Why are the trade talks secret? ... I actually have had supporters of the deal say to me, 'They have to be secret, because if the American people knew what was actually in them, they would be opposed.' " Joyce Woods, Ashland Support Toxic Free Kids Act As the business owner of Ecopiggy, a wholesale distributor of natural children’s products servicing stores nationwide, I have a deep appreciation for the Toxic Free Kids Act, Senate Bill 478. BPA exploded in the headlines in 2008, when studies regarding plastic baby bottles were released. Manufacturers were quick to substitute the ingredient. Maybe too quick. Recent studies are showing that BPA-free plastics are indeed leaching synthetic estrogens. This report has been followed by a flurry of parents seeking 100 percent plastic-free, non-toxic children’s products. While our policy at Ecopiggy is to closely research each brand, confirming quality of product and fair trade practice, we offer only a handful of brands. There are thousands of brands available to parents in Oregon that are not monitored closely. Parents have the right to know what chemicals are in consumer goods. State policies need to manage toxic chemicals from start to finish, prioritizing ways to protect the health of our most vulnerable citizens: infants and children. This is why I am in full support Toxic Free Kids Act, Senate Bill 478. Hayley Mete, Ashland Thanks for kindness Heartfelt thanks to the stranger who performed a "random act of kindness" by presenting me with a bouquet of red carnations on Valentine's Day. She did not know that I had lost my dear husband of 44 years recently to brain cancer. He was a romantic at heart and always gave me red carnations on Valentine's Day. I had stopped for a coffee on the way home to Vancouver, B.C. and was so speechless by her kindness that I was only able to give her a hug or else I would have cried. Next year I will change the whole meaning of Valentine's Day for me by paying it forward. Doris Luking, Surrey, B.C.
