Author Talk: Former Ashland City Councilor Alice Hardesty will discuss her book "An Uncommon Cancer Journey: The Cosmic Kick That Healed Our Lives" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Bloomsbury Books, 290 E. Main St., Ashland. The book tells the story of her husband Jack Hardesty's healing from esophageal cancer in the 1980s despite two terminal diagnoses. Alice Hardesty accompanied him on his journey as he tried alternative and complementary treatments. Along with physical healing came the healing of their marriage. Indie Concert: Portland-based Grand Lake Islands will perform with California singer/songwriter Robin Bacior at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Mix Sweet Shop, 57 N. Main St., Ashland. An Evening of Scottish Music: Multi-instrumentalist Brian Freeman returns with his annual celebration of the birthday of Scottish poet and songwriter Robert Burns at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. Second St., Ashland. Freeman — who plays guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo and autoharp — will present Burns' "Auld Lang Syne," "Comin' Thro' the Rye" and others, along with his own original and contemporary Celtic-style folk music.
