Plans to admit some into the United States are the subject of fierce debate: What if terrorists pose as refugees to enter the country? For three Ashland medical professionals, the refugees are patients like any others: sick people who need their help. So they have traveled to where those people are to lend their skills. Dr. John Sager of Ashland recently returned from a refugee camp in Jordan on the Syrian border, where he spent eight days treating hundreds of people a day, mostly women and children, who fled their homes in Syria to escape the bombing, much of it the work of the Syrian government. Sager knows the work is dangerous, but it's his sixth trip there, and he says he will probably go back, citing his upbringing in Ashland and its "strong ethic of helping out." Also from Ashland and also helping out are Dr. Corey Kahn and nurse Louisa Reade, who volunteered to spend three weeks in Macedonia, on the Greek border, where thousands of refugees stream in every day after crossing from Turkey, trying to get to other countries in Europe. They, too, are patients, which is why Kahn and Reade are there. All three Ashlanders say they don't see this crisis ending soon. The refugee flood will continue, and so will the vital work of volunteers.
