Ashland residents should understand that O'Meara is remarkably responsive to concerns about police treatment of those with mental challenges — and has sought out special training for his officers even when none was immediately available. The video in question, which depicts the May 19 arrest of Charles Albert Colenaty, has received 195,000 views since it was posted, and has been shared 3,000 times on Facebook. That is not unusual for videos that appear to depict police mistreating people. The problem with video clips is they do not provide context, and can be misleading. Sometimes they depict actual police misconduct, sometimes not, but it's impossible to know for sure just by watching. In this case, O'Meara says he has reviewed the video and the incident, and is satisfied that officers acted appropriately. Every use of force by officers is investigated, he said, and in this case was deemed justified. O'Meara has demonstrated his commitment to treating all who encounter police with respect and understanding. When he was approached two years ago by the father of an autistic man who was traumatized by an arrest, O'Meara began looking for training for his officers. Finding none available, he developed his own with the help of the Rogue Valley Council of Governments. That's the mark of a compassionate police chief.
