When remounted, Mike and his gun will be presiding over what looks like a newly paved parking lot. If the City Council asked Ashlanders how they prefer the $57,000 budgeted for Mike's repairs be spent, I bet they would say use that money to make repairs to the more important historical icon, the Plaza itself.   Claudia Little   Ashland Levy helps home values Homeowners and voters in Ashland have the opportunity to support youth activities and academics by renewing the Youth Activities and Academics Levy (Measure 15-134). There is nothing in Measure 15-134 that discusses home and property values. But the reality is that homes tend to be worth more in areas where schools offer more activities and greater academic performance. Well-supported schools, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Mt. Ashland, and all the recreational activities available in Ashland are what make our city a desirable place to live. As a long time Realtor based in Ashland, I can say that the high quality of Ashland schools is a driving factor in the price people are willing to pay to live here and will play a role in the future of property values. The reason a yes on Measure 15-134 is beneficial to all homeowners is because it creates a school district that is a selling point for all houses in Ashland. Even if there are no children in your house, you may sell to a family with a child who is willing to pay more so that the child may attend Ashland schools. Every property in Ashland profits from outstanding schools, and a yes on Measure 15-134 will continue the tradition of excellence. Please vote Yes on Measure 15-134. It helps the schools and the value of your property. Eric Poole Ashland Consider bees, too Thanks to Cynthia Mitchell for her recent letter to the Daily Tidings about the Fremont Cottonwood tree. One other thing to consider in our efforts to save this tree is how important cottonwoods are to our honeybees. Honeybees collect resin from cottonwood to make propolis to line their hives to keep the hive healthy. Apparently cottonwood is one of their favorite resins, as it has antibiotic attributes that honeybees need to keep themselves protected from chalk brood and other diseases. Bees and other pollinators are responsible for one out of three bites of the food we eat.
