As I drive around this town I am heartbroken by the vanishing beauty of this area. I am very much opposed to the heavy infill of cramped housing going up on every bit of open space. Vehicles, trailers, etc. are parked on our streets and crowd our ability to drive and walk safely. People leave unwanted and usually broken items along our public and private roads with “FREE” signs like they are somehow doing others a favor by giving. All of this littering of debris around our town feels to me to show a lack of respect for Ashland's natural beauty and speaks poorly of our community. I do try and “let it go,” though no matter which direction I turn, I can’t get away from it. Except for when I am home. I take pride in my home and enjoy working on it and taking in the beautiful views Mother Nature offers. It is in these moments that I find peace. That changed a few weeks ago when Adroit Construction made a deal with AT&T to install a cell tower on their property. I have reached out to one of the owners of Adroit and have discovered from our exchange of voice mails that they put this tower in for both the Adroit business as well as to improve their private residences. The installation of this tower seems to be a way to pad their pocketbooks, yet it sacrifices neighboring views and raises great concerns of families whose children attend Bellview school. I am aware of the reality that we all need and want cellular service. I solved our problem of unreliable cell service by switching carriers. Rather than installing another tower, I went with a reliable service that already exists. An additional tower was not needed on my account. The Adroit/AT&T 125-foot, bright white tower has an intense white light during the day and an annoying bright red light that blinks in 2-second intervals at night. All of this is something I can’t seem to ignore no matter how hard I try. Because it is in a fly zone, it requires these lights, yet as far as I'm concerned it is a form of visual pollution that seems to be here to stay. I feel this project speaks badly of all persons and businesses responsible for this blinking monument. It's poor public relations and now, every two seconds, my neighbors and I think of Adroit. For any citizens who find this project concerning, please let it be known. On May 2, there is a hearing regarding another tower to be installed on the west end of Ashland. Zach Brombacher Ashland Respect service dogs If you see a service dog in Lithia Park — as service animals they are allowed — this is what you should not do: yell at the owner and call him/her a liar and cheater. If you think the dog really isn't a service dog and is in the park illegally, this is what you should do: contact a ranger at the nearby ranger station for further investigation by a park official. On Thursday, April 2, a woman verbally attacked me regarding my service dog, who was wearing a vest with insignia and had a photo I.D. card attached. My dog is registered with USAR (United Service Animal Registry) and I have a doctor's prescription for a medical alert service animal. My condition is not readily visible so sometimes people assume I have no need for a service dog. The encounter with this volatile woman was very upsetting. Please folks, be respectful. Put snap judgments and negative suspicions aside until you know for sure. I know some people cheat by putting bogus vests on their animal but you can't always tell who's legitimate and who's not by just looking at them. So, leave it up to park rangers and/or police to monitor violations. Thanks! C.J.
