Now that they’ve made it back to Sioux City, Iowa, Kennedy hopes that all those sunrise get-togethers will pay off starting today, when the 10th-ranked Raiders take on 21st-ranked Robert Morris (Ill.) at 10:15 a.m. (8:15 a.m. Pacific) in the first round of the 32-team national tournament at the Tyson Events Center. If the Raiders win, they’ll play a second-round game at 8:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. Pacific) Friday. “We’ve been preparing ourselves in case this happened,” said Kennedy, who’s guided the Raiders to nationals for the first time since 2009. “Our players are excited about that. It really doesn’t worry them at all. When we saw the draw, they were like, ‘We’ll be ready.’” The national tournament format calls for eight first-round games today and eight more Thursday, then picks up again with second-round action Thursday and quarterfinal games Saturday. After a day off, the final four will compete in the semifinals Monday. The championship game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (5:05 p.m. Pacific) Tuesday and will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The Raiders (26-4), who placed second in the Cascade Conference before bowing out in the CCC tournament semifinals, haven’t won a game at nationals since 1999 and haven’t advanced past the second round since 1997. Overall, the Raiders have lost their last four national tourney games, two under Kennedy. Robert Morris (21-6) will have to spring an upset to keep the Raiders from ending that 16-year drought, though the Chicago-based school’s resume suggest it’s capable. The Eagles, who are 3-3 in their last six games, placed third in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference but showed their potential while winning 12 games in a row during the regular season. Kennedy said the Eagles don’t have as much depth as the Raiders but boast three of the best players in the country - 6-foot junior guard Jailyn Norris, 5-foot-11 senior forward Yolanda De La Torre and 5-foot-9 sophomore guard Dana Gettis. Norris averages 9.1 points and 4.0 rebounds, De La Torre 15.7 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks and Gennis 16.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 steals. “Well, they’re quick, they’re athletic and they’re long on defense,” Kennedy said. “They like to pressure, full court or three-quarter court, and once they’re in the half-court they’re mostly (zone). They’ll be looking to trap and rely on their quickness and speed to get steals. And a lot of time they’ll get teams offensively out of their rhythm, they’ll get steals and then get into the open court.” And once they get into the open court, which is the Eagles’ specialty — they rank third in the NAIA in steals (15.3) and seventh in turnover margin (minus-6.2) — they usually take advantage. For that reason, Kennedy said, the Raiders must protect the ball, establish their inside game and win the rebounding battle. In other words, they must continue to do what they’ve been doing all season, especially during a late-season nine-game winning streak that saw the Raiders crush their opponents by an average margin of 22.3 points. “I think we’ve done really well (against pressure defenses) this season,” Kennedy said. “Our guards are able to handle pressure, and Ashley (Claussen) is one of the best point guards in the nation. We just gotta establish the inside game on offense and hit open shots. And on defense, we need to keep them in front and be able to rebound so we can start our tempo as well. We’re not going to change.” Translation: the Raiders won’t slow down for slow-down’s sake. Employing a balanced attack that features five double-digit scorers, the Raiders rank sixth in the nation in points per game (84.1) and second in field-goal percentage (47.3). Senior forward Alexi Smith and junior forward Carly Meister provide most of the inside muscle, while Claussen, senior guard Kristen Schoenherr and sophomore guard Autumn Durand are the top outside scoring threats. Smith averages 13.9 points and 7.6 rebounds and Meister 11.8 points and 6.2 boards. Claussen averages 10.5 points and leads the team with 149 assists, and Schoenherr averages 11 points per game and is hitting 43.5-percent of her 3-point attempts. Smith, Meister, Schoenherr and Claaussen have started all 30 games for the Raiders. The SOU-Robert Morris winner will face either seventh-ranked Marian (Ind.) or unranked Tabor (Kan.) in the round of 16.
