Raider senior Brad Coen shot out the lights against Northwest University. Coen went five-of-eight from beyond the arc to lead all players in scoring with 17 points. The Raiders (5-6, 2-1 league) scored first, never trailed and, after the midway point in the first half, maintained a healthy double-digit advantage over Northwest (10-5, 2-1) en route to a 74-48 stomping of the previously league-best Eagles. "It wasn't easy," ninth-year Raider head coach Brian McDermott said. "We didn't expect the margin to be like that." Buoyed by a game-high 17 points from senior guard Brad Coen, 15 of them coming from behind the arc, SOU shot 50.9 percent on the night and recorded a 56.3 percent three-point success rate. "We just played well," Coen said. "When the shots start falling, it's contagious." But Southern's dominating play reached beyond the offensive spectrum of the game. The Raiders destroyed Northwest on the boards 41-29. Prior to their McNeal Pavilion appearance, the Eagles had dominated their opponents to the tune of 8.7 more boards per game. "We're starting to learn how to play hard every night and every possession," McDermott said. Fuel for the fire Coen started the night of right for the Raiders, sinking a triple just over a minute into the game. Northwest came back with a deuce, SOU junior Shea Washington swooped in with a dunk and Eagle senior Nate Lindseth hit two from the top of the key. It was 5-4 and no one had control of the game, yet. Southern scored 19 of the next 22 ticks, carried by an team effort to put points on the board. Although Coen and Washington were the only Raiders to notch double-digit totals on the nights, 10 of 11 Raiders scored, including two players with eight points and three with six. "We don't have a lot of big scorers," McDermott said, handing out kudos to the players who came off the bench to make big contributions. "We're going to be that kind of a team. We need to get a lot of guys with four and six and three [points]." By the half, SOU had doubled the Eagle effort, 32-16. The Raiders had netted two-thirds of their three-point attempts while holding Northwest to nothing from beyond the arc and a dismal 21.4 percent shooting in the field. Although the Eagles flew into the second half, notching the first two scores, they couldn't do much to stifle the SOU offense or break down the Raider 'D.' "I wouldn't say it was easy," Coen said. "It was defense. We just took them out of the game." The game would get no closer than a 12-point margin, a strong enough showing to warrant impromptu cheering rounds when Coen and Washington were pulled from the game to give younger players a chance at it. A standing ovation followed the final buzzer, signaling the 74-48 upset. "They are one of the teams that's going to be there in the end," McDermott said of Northwest, explaining why it was so important for the Raiders take one away at home early in the season. Tonight the Raiders face Evergreen State at McNeal Pavilion.
