--> --> Council taking second look at proposed smoking ordinance Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland City Council will take a second look at a proposed ordinance that would have banned smoking in outdoor public spaces, required city licensing of tobacco vendors and ended all self-service tobacco sales. The council instead could adopt an ordinance that only requires tobacco vendors to obtain a city license to sell tobacco. The license fee would be set by the council. Members will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Ashland Civic Center council chambers, 1175 East Main St. The meeting will be carried live on Rogue Valley Community Television Channel 9. At a council meeting last month, Citizens for a Healthy Ashland had proposed the more strict ordinance, but councilors balked at the ban on outdoor smoking and self-service sales. In other business, the council is scheduled to: · review an Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission request to withdraw an appeal of a planned subdivision on the Perozzi property uphill from Southern Oregon University. By withdrawing the appeal, the city can ensure that fire hazard remediation and hillside development conditions of approval imposed by Jackson County are met. The commission had hoped to negotiate for a public trail through the property, but negotiations have been unsuccessful, according to City Attorney Paul Nolte. · consider a franchise agreement with Sprint Communications Company allowing the business use of 14,000 feet of public right of way in the city for a fee. · review the a quarterly financial report for the city. · consider the appointment of Southern Oregon University student Jason Burke to the Ashland Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission.
