MUSIC Julliard student Ariel Horowitz performs at SOU By Angela Decker for Revels DailyTidings.com By Angela Decker for Revels Posted Dec. 24, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Angela Decker for Revels Posted Dec. 24, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Nineteen-year old violinist Ariel Horowitz looks forward to sharing her sheer joy of music with the Rogue Valley by playing gorgeous classical violin pieces. “This concert is going to be really special, I’ll be playing music that I absolutely love,” Horowitz says. “These are golden gems of the violin repertoire.” As part of Chamber Music Concerts annual series of concerts, Horowitz will present a recital of Johannes Brahms, Ernest Chausson, Antonin Dvorak, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Henryk Wieniawski at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, in the Music Recital Hall at Southern Oregon University, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Tickets are $15, or $5 for students and Oregon Trail Card holders, and can be purchased online at chambermusicconcerts.org or by calling 541-552-6154. Horowitz says she hopes the audience will enjoy the music as much as she does. “I chose pieces that are deeply meaningful to me,” she says. “The music isn’t fancy or frilly; it is just beautiful and uplifting.” Her favorite piece in the recital is “Poeme,” by Chausson. “It’s such a meaningful piece of music. It’s the darkest piece in the concert, exploring that dark side we all have,” she says. “It was written during the French impressionism era and it has really rich colors. The piece is very special and I’m looking forward to sharing it in a town that is so special to me.” Horowitz studies at Juilliard School of Music with violinists Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho as a Dorothy DeLay Scholarship recipient, and she is pursuing her bachelor of arts in music. She says that, in addition to her studies, she practices violin about five to six hours a day. “It’s a lot of work, but I love it. I can’t imagine anything else,” she says. The prize-winning violin student has a family connection with Ashland. As a child, she frequently came to the area to visit her god-parents, Rabbi David and Debra Zaslow. “Her level of dedication has been incredible from the time she was 4 years old,” Zaslow says. “We are so proud of her and so excited to have her share the beauty and magic she creates with the violin.” Miles Graber — also trained at Juilliard — will accompany Horowitz on piano. “Miles Graber is amazing, and we work really well together,” Horowitz says. “I think everyone is going to have a great time. People who love classical music will enjoy it, and people who think they don’t love it, will realize they do,” she says. Horowitz says she feels a warm connection to Ashland and the people in the community. “I think the audience is going to feel connected too, both with the music and each other,” she says. “Music can pull us into a sort of spiritual conversation and we’re all in it together."
