Ashland Association's new sales and marketing director brings a new approach that could help the community-owned ski area  become a sustainable, year-round recreation destination. That's a welcome change of direction for the mountain, and we hope it's successful. Jamie Schectman comes to Mount Ashland from the Mountain Rider's Alliance, a start-up company whose mission statement says it is dedicated "to develop values-based, environmentally friendly, rider-centric mountain playgrounds that encourage minimal carbon footprint business practices, while making a positive impact in the local community." If that sounds like a good fit for Mount Ashland, then you'll welcome the news that the ski area has partnered with the alliance to apply its philosophy to a struggling ski area in need of a long-term vision. Years of courtroom battles with environmental activists opposed to the ski area's expansion plans have left the operation without the cash it needs to proceed. Last year's no-snow non-season forced the Mt. Ashland Association to take out a loan to stay afloat. If the ski area continues to rely only on winter snowpack to keep going from year to year, it will be only a matter of time before two bad years in a row push it under. But if paying visitors can be lured up the mountain in the summertime for concerts, ziplines, retreats and reunions, that would give the resort a steady cash flow to tide it over between ski seasons. We hope the Mountain Rider's Alliance approach gives the ski area the boost it needs.
